My Trigeminal Neuralgia Story

This website is for patients with pain to journal and describe what they have occurred with their pain of trigeminal neuralgia. The more detailed they write about their pain the greater chances they have of having someone else with a similar pain help then or on the other hand for their  journal to help someone else. This is a "win win" website where we all are out to help each other. As you read this site and others linked from this page in the box below you  will see how different each situation is and yet how much similarity there is in the patient problems.

6  My Trigeminal Neuralgia Story by Molly Harker

I have had TN for almost two years . The doctor knew immediately what was wrong with me. He put me on tegretol. What a relief, instantly, but it has now come back! I am suffering so much. The Doctor upped my tegretol but it made me feel terrible so now I take four a day plus two strong paracetamols but it never goes away completely. It is driving me mad and I am so bad tempered. I don't know what to do. I am sixty eight years old and i have been considering surgery of some sort but it all sounds so major. I have had enough of it.

I first thought I had toothache although I had all my teeth out years ago, I thought I had a piece of tooth left in my gums. I Had this terrible pain and went to my small local Hospital. The Doctor was out on a call so the nurse called him back as I was in such agony. When I explained what it felt like, I was wandering up and down and crying and yelling a bit ( I was quite ashamed of myself after) he just knew. It was late at night , he looked on his pc and found a Pharmacist open we went straight down got the Tegretol my husband bought me a bottle of water and I took one straight away. I kept thinking everyone must have thought I was an addict or something. I won't go in that shop again ! Within an hour it settled down, then my own Doctor prescribed tegretol since. For one year and five months I was painfree and as I have already said my own Doctors  are  very good and I get very good treatment from them. I now take a higher dose but its still niggling away, waking me up in the morning but settles when I take my medication but I do take paracetamol now and again. Won't your Doctor do anything for you ? Molly

Definitions of Trigeminal Neuralgia on the Web:
  • Sharp shooting lancinating pain found in the forehead, face or jaw region. The pain is usually on only one side of the face. It can sometimes be seen in the setting of multiple sclerosis. Treatment usually consists of medical therapy (the primary drug is Tegretol ). ..

  • Lightning-like, acute pain in the face caused by demyelination of nerve fibers at the site where the sensory (trigeminal) nerve root for that part of the face enters the brainstem.
A painful condition caused by a disturbance in the function of the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from your face to your brain. The pain is similar to an electric shock.
a disorder of the trigeminal nerve (a cranial nerve) that causes brief attacks of severe pain in the lips, cheeks, gums, or chin on one side of the face
a condition which produces pain in the trigemenal nerve in the face.
Paroxysmal pain in the face. Pain may be so severe that it causes an involuntary grimace or "tic". (Tic Douloureux).
  • a condition resulting from a disorder of the trigeminal nerve. Symptoms are headache and intense facial pain that comes in short, excruciating jabs.
intense paroxysmal neuralgia along the trigeminal nerve

  • Trigeminal neuralgia is a neuropathic disorder of the trigeminal nerve that causes episodes of intense pain in the eyes, lips, nose, scalp, forehead, upper jaw, and lower jaw. Trigeminal neuralgia is considered by most physicians to be the most painful condition known to man, and has, in fact, been called the, "suicide disease," because this has been the choice of many people who were unable to have their pain controlled with medications or surgery.
